Let’s ask ourselves, what is mindfulness? Mindfulness is living in the present moment. This concept can help you in many ways that you may not even fully understand. We practice mindfulness in formal activities such as yoga. Informally, it can be as simple as washing the dishes or noticing nature. Mindfulness and wellness are extraordinarily connected, with three main concepts to consider.
Emotional Regulation: A person's ability to effectively manage and respond to emotional experiences.
Enhancing Focus: The effects of mindfulness meditation training on attentional processes, including alerting, orienting, and executive attention.
Reduction of Stress: As highlighted by the NIH, a study involving nurses facing stress and burnout used mindfulness techniques. The study found that, among high-stress nurses (11%) and those feeling burned out (43%), the use of mindfulness significantly reduced stress and burnout. This study demonstrates that mindfulness-based programs are a promising intervention for reducing stress among nurses.
To fully understand mindfulness, people must acknowledge its three main concepts: awareness, acceptance, and presence. Each of these concepts helps with intentionally paying attention, embracing the present moments, and being aware of what is happening at the moment. These concepts help us understand the impact of mindfulness on our bodies and minds.
